The Sele School

Careers Education and Guidance

The aim of careers guidance in the school is to prepare all students to take their place to the full in society, both as workers and as members of their local community.

This is the basis of the Careers and Futures Rationale at The Sele School:

Fundamentally, school should be about teaching students about the world and what they may want to aspire to. Subjects should be foundational in learning about the world of work and what their subjects can lead to.

Our school Careers and Futures Rationale cements the importance of school as a stepping stone to future and future careers. Our Careers provision aims to help our students to unlock their potential by giving them experiences from a diverse range of opportunities. From Year 7 onwards students will experience activities specifically designed to help them think about their long term aims and aspirations both within the classroom and though Career specific activities.

This is underpinned by our school moto Non Ducor Duco- I am not led; I lead. We want all students to feel invested in their future decisions and for them to feel invested in.

We open the wider world to our students through a series of outreach employer talks, tailor made careers-based packages and videos, in person work shadowing and visits to colleges and university. In lessons, all students will be exposed to subject specific Career discussion and 5 sessions a year are devoted to careers and Futures within the curriculum.

Possibilities, not probabilities.

We benefit from close links and an effective working relationship with Services for young people who are always available to give detailed information and advice concerning employment and Further and Higher education.  The policy of the school is to introduce Careers and futures Education in Year 7.   In Year 9, when subject and course choices are discussed, care is exercised to ensure that the selection of subjects retains an open career choice path.

During Year 10 students have the opportunity to take part in both work experience and a Careers fairs where students have the opportunity to speak with a wide variety of professions and industries.

Important decisions concerning future careers are made in Year 11: the transition from compulsory schooling to Sixth form studies, Apprenticeship, Further Education and Post-16 courses in school are taken very seriously with Students able to avail of 1-2-1 meetings with a SFYP advisor and with the Careers and Futures lead in school.

Post-16 students are carefully advised on Higher Education courses at universities and other places of Further Education.  They are also given relevant information regarding employment and training schemes.
